POP! Tip #4: The Perfect Pitch

Today we bring POP!Tip #4 to you, lovely human. This is the Media Training workshop which is the 4th of the 7 workshops I teach in the POP 7-month mastermind. It’s where the “rubber” of platform building hits the “road” of taking the stage…preparing you to get your message, art, book, service, and/or product out into the world with your authentic self leading the charge.

Public Speaking is the second biggest fear for many authors and thought leaders–WHA!?.

Turns out, I was once the same. That traumatic media training in NYC I received as a new CEO (the one where the media trainer charged me $5K for a day of video taping me say, ‘um, um’ yeah, that one) scarred me for years to come. Why? because when the camera rolled, it felt, well, unnatural. I then took a $10K week-long media training where I would design my “Ted talk” and guess what happened? I couldn’t stop wringing my hands and apologizing for being…um, me on the stage.

So why is it that most confident of us can get so nervous when it comes to really standing up and saying what we mean to say? Even if we’re badasses at being in front of a camera, we often forget to express the most important talking points!

I remember “nailing it” on Lou Dobbs show one night in NYC while on book tour, but when I watched the segment, realized the most important point of my book had been left off the table–I’d forgotten to mention who the book was for!

When we forget to embody our message as a whole, our forgetting, fears, or doubts can create a circling phobic vortex of doubt. We then opt out of becoming the public speaker we’ve dreamed of because, well, it’s easier to go back to anonymity.

If you’ve ever yearned to be a brave, dynamic, inspiring presenter or speaker, yet you find yourself either giving canned speeches, or none at all because you’ve decided you “aren’t good at public speaking anyway,” then month 4 of POP! is for you. If you can’t enroll, no worries, I’m going to give you the essence of the teaching now, here…

  • Tell one true story.
  • Relate that story to the purpose of your work.
  • Relate the purpose of your work to the audience.
  • Share the story of another person that illuminates the purpose of your talk.
  • Tell a joke or two.
  • Don’t brag, ever.
  • Make fun of yourself when you get nervous.
  • Stay on track–save your tangents for happy hour.
  • Make it about them.
  • And say this prayer before you step onto the stage, “Dear God/Universe, please use me as your vessel to uplift each and every person in the room.”

There. You now have my recipe for 95-100% A+ ratings for your keynotes and public speaking moments. As soon as I stopped trying to be cool is when my talks got cool. The minute I opted to just be my dorky sincere self is when I began getting keynotes all over the world. And, there is one final thing you will want to take to heart.

You are worth your message.

If you have something to say but go blank when writing that keynote, press release, book, or Ted talk Call BS on your fears and get to the other side by using the recipe above. I promise it works.

After hosting a web series called Inspiration Inc., I cringed through the dailies watching myself nervously interview some of the most amazing people–they were relaxed but I was forced, shaky, nervous. I wondered why I turned into a totally different person when I was in front of a camera.

I realized that when in the spotlight, my subconscious underpinnings were making a break for their 15 minutes of fame. I hadn’t dug deep into what was making me want everyone to like me. THAT was holding me back with my media appearances. Once I let go of the need to be liked, the real me got to play. Guess what? More people liked that me than the other one. My results soared.

In month 4 of POP! You will clean out the closets of your insecurities that can at times turn you into someone you are not either on stage, in an important meeting, or in an interview. We master the art of putting yourself, your product, service and craft out into the public arena with complete confidence and authenticity that isn’t tinged with the underpinnings of fear or insecurity.

Answer this key question: WHY do you want to be on stage or in front of the camera? Why do you want to have a podcast or become a known author?

Is it fame? That’s ok!
Is it money? That’s ok!
Is it to be loved? Shoot, try again!
